The Lighthouse Beacon Foundation Scholarship

The Lighthouse Beacon Foundation Scholarship strengthens the academic excellence of Kentucky students by providing need-based scholarships to those pursuing an engineering education at the University of Kentucky Pigman College of Engineering. Through the scholarship’s Lighthouse Beacon Scholars (LBS) Program, students gain the skills, experiences, and professional traits needed to address real-world challenges, achieve success in their academic pursuits, and make a lasting impact in their communities.

The LBS is a formal scholarship enrichment program that includes engagement activities, encouraging classes, inspirational programs, and a formal mentoring platform. It is designed to improve student retention, boost internship, co-op, and job placements, and increase graduation rates. 

The LBS hosts and supports dozens of engagement opportunities throughout the year to encourage and enlighten students. LBS activities engage and celebrate the annual success of the students with families and administrators at the annual Scholarship Luncheon. LBS first-year students focus on success strategies, adaptation approaches, and leadership themes through Pigman Pathways Seminars. LBS programs build confidence and elevate skill levels for students and provides students with a unique and transformational life investment and is centered on creating an ecosystem of support by placing students on the path to success.

The Lighthouse Beacon Foundation Scholarship Application

The LBS mentoring platform brings together a dedicated group of experienced and respected professionals who provide thoughtful guidance and sustained support to students. Through structured, goal-oriented mentorship, students gain valuable professional insights, positive reinforcement, and exposure to successful role models.

FAQs

    1. Freshman applicants must apply for admission to the University of Kentucky Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering.

    2. Students must complete The Lighthouse Beacon Foundation Scholarship application.

    3. While the scholarship can be completed in advance and saved, the scholarship cannot be submitted until all required documents are provided.

    4. An interview is required for all scholarship finalists.

    5. Scholarship amounts are based on financial need, are unique to each individual applicant, and are determined after applicants are accepted. Awards are not guaranteed and may change depending on demonstrated financial need.

    • An unweighted GPA of 3.50 or higher

    • Possess a 27 or higher on Math ACT section or 1260 on the SAT

    • Must be a Kentucky resident.

    • Eligibility is limited to students applying as first-year undergraduates

    • Pursuing a degree in engineering at the University of Kentucky Pigman College of Engineering

    • Demonstrated financial need

    • Proven record of leadership, active engagement, and/or community service

    • Preference will be given to applicants from the following Eastern Kentucky counties: Bell, Boyd, Breathitt, Carter, Clay, Elliott, Estill, Floyd, Greenup, Harlan, Jackson, Johnson, Knott, Knox, Laurel, Lawrence, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Lewis, Magoffin, Martin, McCreary, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Pike, Powell, Pulaski, Whitley, and Wolfe

    2. Most recent transcript (unofficial is acceptable)

    3. FAFSA Award Letter

    4. The University of Kentucky enrollment letter

    5. Two recommendations (one from a math or science teacher)

  • Due to the number of applicants and limited scholarships, The Lighthouse Beacon Foundation Scholarship will not be offered to every excellent student who meets the requirements and applies. However, we assure each applicant that their application will receive consideration and fair treatment in a very competitive process.

    1. Maintain full-time status while remaining in good standing and not on disciplinary probationary

    2. Live in the Engineering Living Learning Program for the first two years

    3. Maintaining a 2.8+ GPA

    4. Submit FAFSA, midterm grades, and semester transcripts

    5. Participate in TLBF classes each year

    6. Participate in mandatory engagement activities including but not limited to the summer bridge retreat, the etiquette luncheon, and the LBS celebration luncheon

    7. Volunteer in a planned community service project each semester

    8. Partake in calculus, physics, and chemistry prep online classes for students who've not taken these courses
